Creation of Double-Bill Quartet ‘Pictures We Make’,

November 5th, 2012

Over the last month the Chameleon team have been conducting research into our next project and today we are in the studio starting the creation process for our new work, which we will be developing from November 2012 through to February 2013 – when it will premiere at The Lowry in Salford Quays.

Pictures We Make is the title of a double-bill evening of work, with the first piece to be choreographed by Anthony Missen & Kevin Edward Turner – also titled Pictures We Make – and we are extremely excited to be welcoming Goddard/Nixon on board who will be choreographing the second piece Eden.

Goddard/Nixon
Founded in 2009 as a choreographic collaboration between acclaimed artists Jonathan Goddard and Gemma Nixon, Goddard Nixon has grown to steady acclaim. Creating dance for both live events film and TV, work has recently been shown nationally and internationally at the Royal Opera House, the Royal Court, the Victoria and Albert Museum, in India and throughout Spain.

For the first time Company Chameleon will be expanding from duet to quartet for both of these works in the double-bill. Alongside Anthony & Kevin, we are delighted to be working with two exceptional female dance artists, Gemma Nixon & Elena Thomas.

Gemma Nixon
After training at the Arts Educational School (Tring), Gemma joined the National Youth Dance Company under the direction of John Chesworth before moving to New York to undertake a work/study programme. On returning to the UK she joined Scottish Dance Theatre, under the direction of Janet Smith, where she created new works with choreographers including Rui Horta, Didi Veldman and Liv Lorent.

As an actor Gemma played the role Sandy in Monkey, a collaboration between Dundee Rep Ensemble and SDT. Gemma joined Rambert in 2006 where she danced and created several main roles with various choreographers including the Mother in Christopher Bruce’s Hush and Blanche Dubois in Javier De Frutos’s Elysian Fields. She recently performed in Afterlight choreographed by Russell Maliphant.

Gemma is also a founder member of New Movement Collective. A new generation of choreographers with a long collaborative history, New Movement aims to challenge the notions of traditional performance.

Elena Thomas
Elena received her training in France at Ecole Nationale Superieure de Danse de Marseille under the Artistic Direction of Marie-Claude Pietragalla, and later attended the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon under the Artistic Direction of Jean-Claude Ciappara.

Straight from her training, Elena started performing with Jeune Ballet Conservatoire National Superieur de Lyon and appeared in several works including Davy Brun’s Pointless Monkey, under the direction of J.C Ciaparra.

In 2007 Elena performed with Europa Danse for 5 months, before joining Ballet National du Rhin, where she danced in Bertrand d’AT’s Romeo and Juliet, Jo Stromgren’s Coppelia, William Forsythe’s Workwithinwork, and August Bournonville’s La Sylphide.

Most recently Elena has been working with Company La Mov in Zaragoza, performing in several works by Artistic Director Victor Jimenez and a number of visiting choreographers including Company Chameleon.  Elena worked with Anthony & Kevin earlier this year, performing in a work choreographed by Company Chameleon for La Mov called Unspoken Words which premiered on 10th May 2012.

Pictures We Make
The work asks questions of our relationship with ourselves and with other people. As we plunge from I to we, how do we navigate the space between our experience and expectations?
Our insecurities and perceptions about how things should be are tested and reflected back by those with whom we share relationships.
Sourced from stories and experiences from the long shared history of the performers, this new creation by Missen and Turner, brings together four exceptional performers, with an original score by Spanish musician and composer Miguel Marin.

For the second part of this double bill, acclaimed choreographic duo Goddard/ Nixon (2012 Place Prize Semi-Finalists) create a newly commissioned work for four dancers, a potent and poetic exploration of an internal world where space is compressed and intense obsessions are revealed as enduring relationships signal hope.
