Behind the scenes with Reece

3 November 2019

Reece Marshall is currently working with Company Chameleon as part of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) Apprenticeship Scheme.  One of the twelve performers in the cast of The Shadow, we go behind the scenes and talk to Reece about his Apprenticeship so far and the making of our new production.

1 | Reece, you are already into your third month with us here at Chameleon! What has been your favourite moment so far?

There have been so many great ones already! But learning the Of Man And Beast rep has to be my favourite so far. I’ve seen Of Man And Beast a few times before I joined the Company, and always associated the Chameleon movement style with that piece. It felt like such an amazing opportunity to be able to learn it directly with Anthony and the Company.

2 | How have you found The Shadow creation experience so far?

It has been super exciting and really eye opening.  It has also made me really consider how I look at myself. Some of themes that run through The Shadow require some really deep and intense thought so getting myself into that headspace has been really interesting.

3 | What have you found the most challenging?

Stepping into a headspace and thought process that allows you to create whilst exploring the themes of The Shadow and how they relate to you personally. It’s challenged me at times and felt tough. It’s also been really interesting and something I don’t think I could have prepared myself for!

In the last couple of weeks, I feel like I’ve found a good balance with allowing my personal Shadow through and to not filter and judge it, but to allow myself to really experience it. It’s been great to work with Anthony and to get to see how the rest of the Company deal with the creation stages of The Shadow. It’s only at the beginning of this Apprenticeship and I already feel like I’ve learnt so much.

4 | What are you looking forward to the most with The Shadow creation?

It’s just such a great opportunity to be working with Chameleon through the creative process of making a production. We’re getting to experience the creation and tour of a show within the first few months of our Apprenticeship and that’s pretty amazing.

I’m really excited to see what the end product looks like.  So far, it’s been amazing working with Anthony and an incredible company of dancers. Can’t wait to see all the different venues and take it on the road too!
