Refuse at Stockport Culture Weekender

9 March 2024

Spring is in the air and outdoor arts are here!

We’re excited to begin our outdoor touring programme with free performances of Refuse at the Stockport Town of Culture Weekender on Saturday 23 March.

Directed and choreographed by Kevin Edward Turner, Refuse, follows the journey of five people seeking refuge.

A play on words, the performance brings home the brutal reality of how people are refused and treated like refuse, when they leave their homeland in search of a better life.

The movement is physically powerful, the set imaginatively transforms each scene, and the dancers use their bodies and props to explore different feelings, experiences and scenarios.

A powerful dance performance. Refuse shares the raw reality of asylum and migration and encourages reflection from the place of being human.

There will be two free performances of Refuse at 11am and 2pm in St Peter’s Square, outside St Peter’s Church in the town centre.

In between, there will be community dance performances by Chameleon Youth, our youth dance company, Mature Movers and Arc, Stockport’s leading arts and mental health charity.

On Sunday 24 March at 1pm, you can also join us for a family friendly creative dance workshop at the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery.

Find out more about the full programme and cultural celebration here. With 50 events, happening over two days, the Weekender promises to be packed with fun and good times for everyone. Search #SKTownofCulture for all the news on social.
