Flying the flag for dance in Manchester

1 March 2018

We are delighted to announce that we are now part of Manchester’s cultural portfolio, having been awarded funding to develop our offer in the city over the next four years.

As one of fifteen arts organisations based in Manchester to have been awarded funding, the grant awards by the Council reflects the growing recognition locally and nationally of the importance of culture and the arts, both to individuals and also to the life of a city.

Co-Artistic Director, Anthony Missen, said, “We’re excited and proud to be flying the flag for dance and to be part of Manchester’s portfolio over the next four years. A timely development, the award arrives as we celebrate 10 years of Company Chameleon and 10 years of creating dance theatre in the city, which has gone on to tour across the UK and the world.”

Through touring over the last ten years, Company Chameleon has extensively developed its experience, skills and knowledge as an international dance company.  This is learning Chameleon hopes to give back to the city where it was born, so that the many benefits of dance as an artform, and as a form of physical exercise, can be shared and passed-on.

The cultural funding will enable Company Chameleon to develop and enhance the dance offer in Manchester by offering a high quality programme of performances and developing the learning and participation strand of its work, which will take place under the banner of a new ‘get involved’ programme.

Co-Artistic Director, Kevin Edward Turner, said, “We want to see more people taking part and enjoying dance in the city. The funding will support us in working towards this vision by increasing the number of workshops and dance development opportunities that we offer and engaging more people, from all walks of life, in dance.”

The grants awarded to the Manchester arts organsiations over the four years total £1.1m and have been made across a wide range of art forms to reflect the broadest possible range of cultural opportunities for people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds.

The other organisations in the portfolio are Brighter Sound, Castlefield Gallery, Community Arts North West, Contact, Manchester Camerata, Manchester Craft and Design Centre, Manchester Histories, Manchester Jewish Museum, The Edge, Venture Arts, Quarantine, Reform Radio, Streetwise Opera and The Men’s Room.
