Our new Apprentice Company Dancer, Lucia Taylor, was born in London, grew up in Barcelona and studied in Boston.
Following on, we’re delighted her dance journey has brought her to Manchester to be part of Company Chameleon. In this Q&A, Lucia tells us more about her training, her love for dance and finding her dream dance career.
Q1) Hi Lucia! Tell us about yourself!
Hi everyone!
I’m a movement artist and choreographer whose artistry has been largely shaped by my multicultural background and diverse training experience.
I was born of a Kiwi bloodline in London and lived there until I was seven years old. I then relocated to Barcelona where I stayed until I graduated high school. In pursuit of conservatory dance training I went on to living in Boston for my undergraduate degree which then led me back to the United Kingdom for my masters degree.
Each of these places have moulded and shaped me into the person and mover I am today, leaving their own marks upon me and my artistry.
Q2) Tell us about your dance journey so far.
I first started dancing as an afterschool activity when I was very young but it wouldn’t be until I moved to Barcelona where I started my pre-professional training. It was there that I met my mentor, Laura López, who transformed my love for dance into my dream career. Initially only training in classical ballet, contemporary styles would come into my vocabulary during my teenage years through joining a competition team, and competing throughout Europe.
I then continued my training at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in Boston, Massachusetts where I graduated with a Bachelor in the Fine Arts in 2025. During my time at the conservatory I performed works by renowned choreographers and in the summers I attended acclaimed summer intensives. During my last year of school, I joined Verve 25 at Northern School of Contemporary Dance under the directorship of Matteo Marfoglia, moving me back to Leeds in the UK after 15 years!
Q3) When did you hear about Chameleon?
From being connected to the UK, I have always had Chameleon on my radar. However, during my time at Verve I was even further tuned in to all that Chameleon was doing given the proximity I had to them. As Verve is part of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and both Chameleon founders are Alumni, Chameleon was spoken of and referenced frequently.
I have always found the work so mesmerising and unique. Seeing such physicality and strength displayed in their performances regardless of their setting had a significant impact on me. As soon as I saw the audition I knew I wanted to give it a shot, and thank goodness I did!
Q4) What most excites you about being an Apprentice at Chameleon?
Each day I am endlessly inspired by the whole organisation that Chameleon is which I am now lucky enough to call home! Already, I can see myself undergoing tremendous growth as an artist but most importantly as a human, and it’s only the beginning! I have been able to observe all of those around me and the way that things operate here at the company. Everyone here is so committed to craft and it’s clear that behind it there is always so much love.
I am also looking forward to expanding my skill set and soaking up every amount of information, making me stronger both physically and mentally. It is such a blessing to feel fully seen and furthermore appreciated in the space daily, I am eagerly looking forward to every second of this journey.
