Meet Carlos: Adult Class’s new lead facilitator
Two years ago, Chameleon’s Sara Marques launched Adult Class, growing it into the welcoming community it is today – a space for adults of all backgrounds, from complete beginners to returning and retired dancers, to share a love of movement. Now Carlos Oliveira steps in as lead facilitator to carry that legacy forward.
Q: Hi Carlos, tell us a bit about your background.
I’m originally from Porto, Portugal, where I trained in contemporary dance at Balleteatro Professional School. I moved to the UK to study at Northern Ballet School, then completed a Master’s in Dance: Performance and Professional Practices at the University of Salford. Since then, I’ve performed with companies including Company Chameleon, Tavaziva Dance, Joss Arnott Dance, and Coalesce Dance Theatre, and worked as rehearsal director and assistant choreographer alongside Company Chameleon Artistic Director, Kevin Turner MBE.
Q: How does it feel taking over Adult Class?
It feels like a real privilege to be stepping into this role following Sara’s departure. Adult Class is an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy dance and its benefits, and I’m really excited to build on the foundation Sara has created while bringing my own energy, creativity, and approach to the class.
Q: What can people expect from your classes?
A mix of contemporary technique, movement exploration, choreography, and movement-driven creative tasks. It’s a chance to switch off, connect with yourself and others, and simply enjoy moving.
Q: What do you hope people take away from it?
I believe movement can have a positive impact on how we feel, physically and mentally. My aim is for everyone to leave the studio feeling energised and positive – and to carry that feeling with them beyond the studio.
